African soapstone sculptures are hand-carved in the Kisii District in the Western Highlands of Kenya. There, large deposits of soft soapstone underpin a thriving, fair trade, cottage industry. Rural Kisii artisans carve all the stone by hand, giving each piece a unique look and feel. Later, the design is enhanced with dyes carefully hand-applied by artisans in Nairobi.
You will want to caress one of these smooth red hearts decorated with small swirls and hand carved from heavy soapstone by Kisii artisans of western Kenya. The kisii stone is known widely as soapstone because of its tactile, soapy texture. The colorful non-toxic dyed finish is added by Nairobi artisans. African Sculptures are made through Fair Trade practices. This means that the artisans make a living wage, work under humane conditions and do not harm the environment during the creation of their sculptures.
