He was born Ohara Matao and was a notable Japanese painter and print maker during the end of the 19th century and well into the 20th. He studied painting and design before moving to Tokyo in the 1890’s. He used various names on his works depending on his publisher and time in life. Around 1926 he became associated with publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo and began signing many works with Shoson. Through Watanabe, Shoson Ohara began showing his art abroad where his works sold and did particularly well in the United States.
