Block printed fabrics are made using blocks made of Sheesham wood and are hand carved by artisans of India. Each color is printed with a different block to complete the motif being printed. A high degree of craftsmanship is required for both the placement of block and application of pressure. Altogether there can be as many as 16 blocks to create a 5 color design. A set of blocks can be used to print on average 1500 – 2000 yards of fabric after which some blocks must be replaced.
The colors we use for printing are derived from non toxic chemical and mineral dyes. Though we also use vegetable dyes, chemicals dyes have replaced many vegetable pigments as they better withstand present day washing and color-fast requirements and allow for a wider range of colors. A block printed cloth reflects the touch of a human hand, the sensibility and skill of the craftsman, making every piece unique.
Tablecloths and napkins are made through fair trade offering the artisan a living wage and humane working conditions.
Cotton Napkins are hand block printed in India. The fabrics are pre-washed. Artisans use non-toxic dyes, wooden printing blocks and traditional block printing techniques. Due to the cottage industry nature of the tablecloth and napkin production expect and enjoy slight variations in sizes, color and design. Machine washable Cotton Napkins with matching tablecloths available.
