First Friday is always fun at Topanien Global Gifts, but this month’s event was a real party! All sorts of people showed up to give this traditional Mexican drink a taste, and see what else we have to offer.
On her most recent trip to Mexico, Nadine brought back some Mezcal just for this special tasting event.
Like tequila, mezcal is made from the agave plant. Unlike tequila, which can only be made with blue agave, mezcal can and is made from many different varieties of agave. There are a number of other differences, but besides that, the most important one is that unlike tequila, mezcal is still mostly made in small artisanal batches, using traditional methods.
Here we can see Nadine teaching a small group of customers how to drink mezcal:
Mezcal is traditionally served with oranges and sal de gusano, which is ground salt and caterpillars which are invasive to the agave plants. The caterpillars give the sal de gusano its red color.
Customers take their first tastes! And… They like it!
