A safari in Mexico is about animals, art and design. You may see the allusive Lion in his natural habitat or maybe, in a ‘not so natural’ place. No trip planned? Visit Topanien Global Gifts for Fair Trade Alebrije Art. Prices range from $19.99 to over $1000 depending on the artist and the quality of the work.
Work or Play in Mexico Work inspires play in Mexican Alebrije artist Joaquin Hernandez and his wife Laura, who both worked on this colorful Monkey. Joaquin painted him in entirety giving him a plain beige face. Then, wife Laura took over and decorated the face to match the body. Monkey in Bloom is a happy bit of art put together by two people playing with their work.
Golden Alebrije Whale * Rainbow Whale Alebrije Marvelously painted, one with gold paint and the other with blue. The artist added tiny raised gold dots to both pieces giving them a textured look and feel. This is an accent new to the ‘alebrije’ art form of Oaxaca, Mexico. We are experimenting!
Where do many of the Alebrije designs come from? The Maya came first, and settled in modern-day Mexico. Next came the Olmecs, who also settled Mexico. They didn’t build any major cities, but they were widespread and prosperous. They were followed by the Inca in modern-day Peru, and finally the Aztecs, also in modern-day Mexico.
