This uplifting handcrafted Red Heart African Soapstone Box features a vibrant red heart pull with delicate white spiral and polka-dot designs. Carved by hand from soft soapstone by artisans in rural Kenya, the box serves beautifully storing rings or small trinkets.
In Africa the heart symbol or “akoma” means patience, tolerance and love. Akoma is one of many “Adinkra” symbols from West Africa. The Adinkra symbols originated in what is now Cote d’Ivoire, when King Nani kofi Adinkra wore colorful clothing decorated with meaningful symbols. Today the Adinkra symbols like the Akoma can be seen on many things including clothing, jewelry, walls, pottery and other types of art throughout Africa and beyond.
This special little box originates in Kenya’s Kisii District where skilled artisans excel at carving the soft soapstone into modern and functional items for the home. A second set of artists in Nairobi dye each item until a vibrant red hue is achieved.
