The beautiful hand-woven Fair Trade African Butterfly Purse Baskets are all natural, made from the local ‘elephant grass’ and natural dyes. The grass grows wild and is harvested, dried into straw and then woven by the women of the village. The men tan the goat hides and work the leather onto the handles. The baskets are made in the historic village of Bolgatanga, Ghana, Africa and therefore the traditional shaped, round baskets are sometimes called Bolga Baskets. The Fair Trade African Butterfly Purse Basket is an especially well made basket fully meant to be used for carrying items. It is perfect for travel and trips around the neighborhood.
The artisans are mainly farm families who supplement their income by making and selling baskets. The leather covered handles and the tight weave of the African Basket adds to it’s strength.
