The beautiful hand-woven Fair Trade African Butterfly Basket Blue Lake is all natural, made from the local ‘elephant grass’ and natural dyes. The grass grows wild and is harvested, dried into straw and then woven by the women of the village. The men tan the goat hides and work the leather onto the handles. The baskets are made in the historic village of Bolgatanga, Ghana, Africa and therefore the traditional shaped, round baskets are sometimes called Bolga Baskets. The Fair Trade African Butterfly Basket is a large, especially well made basket fully meant to be used for carrying and/or storing items. It is perfect for a trip to your local Farmers’ Market or the grocery store.
The artisans are mainly farm families who supplement their income by making and selling baskets. The leather covered handles and the tight weave of the African Basket adds to it’s strength. The Fair Trade African Butterfly Basket is perfect for carrying kindling, library books, kids toys or picnics.
*Shaping Baskets: Wet baskets with lukewarm water, shape, turn upside down to dry. They will look perfect every time. *See related items below.
The specialized weaving process makes these baskets strong and flexible. Occasionally wetting the African Baskets will re-hydrate the fibers making the basket stronger and lengthening the life of it.
