Indian Kalamkari textiles are part of a tradition going back thousands of years on the subcontinent. Fine, soft, organic cotton becomes, over the course of many, many steps, beautiful, detailed works of art. In India, the textiles are used for many things, from saris, to tablecloths, to quilts, and at Topanien Global Gifts, we’re lucky enough to be able to import some of these for you.
The work is hard, but rewarding, because it is 100% Fair Trade, ensuring that the women and men who craft these classical textiles are well-compensated for their hard work, skill, and experience.
The work is cooperative from start to finish: The men lay out the fabric, carve the wood blocks using traditional techniques, and lay out each pattern on the fabric one careful print at a time, while the women design and sew by hand the many textile handcrafts – including our favorite Cotton Comforters and Tablecloths with matching Napkins!
So many colors! So many patterns! And every single one crafted with exemplary skill and care.
