Independance Day Oaxaca

Nadine was on a buying trip for Topanien Global Gifts in September, hunting down last minute folkart, accessories and jewelry to be shipped to the store and displayed in time for Christmas. Nadine visited Mexico City, Chiapas, Taxaco and Oaxaca; all great centers of culture, color and folkart.

Nadine, owner of Topanien Global Gifts happened to be in Oaxaca during a week long celebration of the Independence of Mexico. Nightly festivities included live music, dancing and fireworks. This is a short clip to give you a feel for the zocalo, town square, during the celebration.

Every time I turn around there is a new celebration, parade, party and or fireworks shooting off in Mexico.  This little parade is a perfect example.  It is the middle of the day on Tuesday and I am walking down the street, when suddenly I hear a booming drum, more music and then, around the corner, flows a colorful parade.
These mini parades are generally advertisements for a local puebla’s celebration for their Saint’s day and inviting you to join them on that day.  The parades are frequent fun surprises in Mexico.
